You see, I’m often working with women whose whole adult life up to now has been based on the idea that they need to ‘lose weight’. Women like you, who’ve spent the last 10, 15, 20 or even more years in the constant and yet failing pursuit of ‘losing weight’ and yet, here they are, with me, often heavier than they have ever been before and even more miserable.
And the idea of Intuitive Eating scares the SHIT out of them. I mean, they’ve spent all that time, learning that this food is bad, that food is good, you should eat more of this food and never give in to cravings. And here I am, telling them they should ignore all that and listen to what their body is telling them – and if that’s to eat cake then… well, go ahead.
Intuitive eating is not about losing weight
So, I have to come out and say it, you may lose weight at some point with intuitive eating but the point of developing intuitive eating is not primarily to lose weight. The point of developing intuitive eating is to heal your disordered relationship with food.
I’m not saying you have an eating disorder but if you’ve been on and off diets for more than a few years then you’ve likely developed a disordered relationship with food and if you work with me then at Beautiful Swans we focus first on addressing that before we worry about what you’re eating and whether it’s ‘good for you’ or not.
Quit carrying around that diet baggage
If you’ve stuck to one diet then you’re lucky because although perhaps not true, the ideas you’re carrying around with you will be the same ideas albeit perhaps quite deeply ingrained. However, the chances are that you’re actually carrying around a large number of different diet methods, some of which will have opposing ideas and not only will you have some ingrained beliefs about good and bad food but your subconscious may be quite confused because of those opposing ideals.
If you’re feeling confused then intuitive eating does work because it’s going to remove the confusion and put you back in control. Intuitive eating works on the premise that food holds no morality and there is no good and bad. Food is just fuel and your body will tell you what it needs in any given moment, you just need to know how to listen.
So does intuitive eating work?
Yes! It works to reset your behaviour around food. It works to put you back in touch with your body and to stop overriding the hunger and fullness signals that dieting taught you to ignore. It works to allow you to really understand your relationship with food and how it makes your body feel, the energy it gives you and also it works to give you the belief that you are in control of your relationship with food and NOT the other way around.
No more telling people you ‘can’t’ just have one biscuit or that you ‘can’t’ let yourself keep chocolate in the house. Intuitive eating helps you learn that you can do all of that and more.
So, that ‘s why I have to say ‘it depends’ when people ask ‘does intuitive eating work’. Yes, it works to help you get out of the diet trap, yes, it works to help you learn what foods your body needs and wants in any given moment, yes, it works to help you overcome any emotional eating issues you may have but I can’t guarantee you’ll lose weight. Then again, I don’t want to (but that’s a different story).
